School Library Journal

With a format that approaches learning as a child does, by asking questions, each chapter explains how each animal lives, eats, and survives in its unique environment. The texts are appealing, using the style and vernacular of young readers – ‘Giraffes can’t just flop down and rest whenever they are tired. It’s quite a task for a long-legged giraffe to lower itself down to the ground-and quite a task to get back up again!’ A full-page, color photograph appears opposite a page of text. The combination of large print, good leading, and wide margins enhances readability. Highlighted words are defined in the glossary. Readers are not only given basic information, but are also alerted to environmental threats facing the animals. These are attractive and solid titles for any elementary school curriculum, and they’re perfect for kids who love to look at great pictures of animals.
