A noteworthy review of Living Well from Children's Literature on November 1, 2002

Cover: Living with Diabetes

Directed to children who may have a friend or classmate with diabetes, this book clearly explains what diabetes is and how it is treated. Photographs of famous people with type I diabetes, such as swimmer Gary Hall and actress Mary Tyler Moore are mixed with photographs of children eating an appropriate diet, exercising, and doing their diabetes care. Hints for helping a friend with diabetes are included, such as continuing the play since exercise helps regulate blood sugar and providing healthy snacks. Symptoms of low and high blood sugar are included, with appropriate advice to inform an adult if these symptoms are noted. A short section discusses adult-onset, or type II diabetes. End matter includes a glossary, question and answer section, index, and list of additional resources. The text is accurate, concise, and clear.
