Editorial Review

A noteworthy review of Machines at Work from Library Media Connection on November 1, 2004

Cover: ATVs

Young readers, especially boys, love learning about sports vehicles such as BMX bikes, ATV’s, and dune buggies. Designed for the beginning reader, but also attractive to the reluctant reader because of the books’ white space and large color photographs, each book is divided into four chapters. Throughout the text, safety is stressed, along with pictures of appropriate safety gear. Full-page photographs give the illusion that the vehicles are actually moving across the page, and young riders are having the time of their lives. Young readers are going to be pestering their folks for one of these sport machines. The last chapter provides an up-close look at all the parts of each machine. Although these books will be very popular with boys and reluctant readers, the cost may prohibit only the larger libraries from the purchase.
