Editorial Review

A noteworthy review of Laughing Matters from School Library Journal on May 1, 2007

Cover: Baseball Jokes

These books are fun for the whole family, but especially beginning readers. They are designed not only to encourage children to read, but also to build confidence as they share the material with their friends. Rosenberg has clearly been listening in school yards or on the playgrounds to find all these great groaners. Baseball Jokes asks, ‘What does an umpire do before he eats? He brushes off the plate!’ Bug Jokes queries, ‘Who can leap tall poodles in a single bound? Super Flea!’ And there are lots more jokes where those came from. Girouard’s illustrations feature silly cartoon characters in bright colors, all placed in an eye-catching layout that often has as many as six jokes on a vividly colored background.
