Editorial Review

A noteworthy review of Math in Sports from Booklist on April 1, 2013

Cover: Basketball: Math on the Court

Basketball is more than putting the ball in the hoop, and much of it involves math, as this introduction points out. Coverage includes the dimensions of courts, points and percentages, graphs, time management, and more, with real game sample problems for readers to try or teachers to use. Many concepts are explained, but the text requires a basic knowledge of the sport. Elements of box scores are used in examples, but a reproduction of one would have clarified some references. Illustrated with full-page photographs of well-known players, including two women hoopsters, the book’s appealing format will attract basketball fans. Back matter includes a glossary and a limited list of further resources.
