Editorial Review

A noteworthy review of The World of Reptiles from Booklist on April 1, 2006

Cover: Sea Turtles

Conservation is the dominant theme of this attractive photo-essay in the World of Reptiles series, which has beautiful full-page color photos that bring readers close to the subject. Fast-fact boxes focus on particular species, providing spot statistics on weight, length, color, habitat, threatened or endangered status, and more. Part of the fascinating science story is the search for what is not known and the use of such technology as radio beacons and radio transmitters to track turtles once they reach the open sea. One chapter touches on turtles in folklore and art across cultures, and the final section, of particular interest to young conservation activists, discusses what people can do to save the turtles from pollution, hunting, and illegal trade. A glossary, a map, a classification chart, a brief bibliography of books and media, and links to the publisher’s Web site conclude the book.
