A noteworthy review of Traditions Around the World from Booklist on October 1, 2021

Cover: Wishing Traditions around the World

While food and celebrations might come to mind first when thinking of cultural traditions, this selection from the Traditions around the World series (8 titles) explores how different cultures practice making wishes. In this book, wishing includes both making wishes oneself (such as in a well or fountain, on a wishbone, or on a star) and stories where wishes come true (such as Aladdin’s Wonderful Lamp and variations on Cinderella). A mix of stock photos and illustrations help readers visualize the various customs and tales, and a small map, often with at least one inset, highlights where the tradition comes from. Although the author’s examples pull slightly more from Europe and the U.S., the book presents a unique topic and provides a good basis for comparing and contrasting global traditions.
