Editorial Review

A noteworthy review of Welcome to the World from Children's Bookwatch on May 1, 2008

Cover: Welcome to Australia

Children around the world have as much in common as their cultures have diversity in custom. ‘Welcome to the World’ is a superbly written and illustrated series specifically designed for students in grades 2 through 6, and features a text written at a third grade reading level. Each of the twelve titles comprising this globe-spanning, 32 page, fully illustrated (full color as well as historic photographs) series showcases how children live in a variety of different countries. Each book addresses what these countries are like, how the people live, the languages that are spoken, and what the children do for fun. There are recipes, key native-language phrases, words to national anthems, informative sidebars, detailed maps, a glossary of key words and phrases, websites and other research resources, and more. Although each book is individually available, both school and community library systems should acquire the entire set for the benefit of their young students and patrons.
