A noteworthy review of Service Dogs from School Library Connection on September 1, 2015
When doing a project on community helpers or introducing nonfiction text features to your younger students, this series is valuable. Each book’s layout is simple, with beautiful, up-close photographs of the dogs and their human counterparts. Short chapters are easily accessible to the young reader. Each book shares a brief history of the dog’s job, some science behind the help they provide, how the dogs are put to work, what makes a particular breed well-suited for their service and training. There is a personal connection by presenting a synopsis of a special service dog and its handler. There are captioned photographs, inset boxes, and the Learn More page which includes other books to read and a link to the publisher’s webpage. Glossary. Index.
