A. R. McHugh is the pen name of Gabriel Flynn. Raised in pristine North Dakota, Flynn is a lifelong sports enthusiast. He received his classical education at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota, where he met his beautiful wife Kristee. Flynn enjoys traveling, reading, playing games with his wife, and wrestling with his four children--Isaac, Peter, Rachel, and Hannah. Flynn and his family live in Eagan, Minnesota. Alex Ericson
Alex Ericson is the pen name for Patrick Merrick. Patrick was born in California and spent much of his early life moving from town to town and from state to state. Eventually, his family settled in Sioux Falls, SD. Patrick graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls in May of 1991. He has since received his Master of Education degree from St. Mary's University in Minneapolis, MN. In addition to writing over 45 children's books (he also writes under such names as Andrew Donnelly, Theresa Woods, Joshua Rutten, Patrick Merrick, and Zachary Inseth), Patrick has been teaching science to children for more than a decade. He is also involved teaching Sunday school, on the local library board, and finally in coaching K-7 basketball and baseball. Alice Flanagan lives in Chicago, Illinois, and writes books for children and teachers. Ever since she was a young girl, Ms. Flanagan has enjoyed writing. Ann Heinrichs
Ann Heinrichs grew up in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She began playing the piano at age three and thought she would grow up to be a pianist. Instead, she became a writer. She is the author of more than seventy books for children and young adults on Asian, African, and U.S. history and cultures, as well as natural history subjects. Ann has also written numerous newspaper, magazine, and encyclopedia articles. She is an award-winning martial artists, specializing in t'ai chi empty-hand and sword forms. Barbara A. Somervill is the author of many books for children. She also writes video scripts and textbooks. She loves learning and sees every writing project as a chance to learn new information or gain a new understanding. Somervill grew up in New York State, but she has also lived in Toronto, Canada; Canberra, Australia; California; and South Carolina. Bob holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of St. Thomas and is an award-winning journalist who has enjoyed a 16-year career in newspapers and online journalism. He is also the president of an editorial services and Web content firm based in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Bob and his wife, Teri, are the parents of three school-age children. Bob Woods, a freelance writer in Madison, Connecticut, has written books for young readers about Barry Bonds, Shaquille O'Neal, the National Football League, NASCAR history, and other sports topics. Over the past 20 years, his work has appeared in many magazines, including Sports Illustrated. C. Ann Fitterer has been writing for The Child's World for more than 15 years. She also writes under the name Cynthia Klingel. Most recently, she has co-written more than 70 Child's World books with Bob Noyed. Cindy and Bob have written books in the Wonder Books Phonics Readers series, the Wonder Books Nonfiction series and the Spirit of America Our Presidents series. They also helped to develop The Spirit of America publishing program, which began in fall 2001. Cindy also helped to develop the Wonder Books publishing program. Cindy was born in Mankato, Minnesota. She lived for a short time in Minneapolis, where she worked in publishing. The rest of the time, she has lived in Mankato, which she believes is a great place to grow up! As a child, Cindy loved reading, writing and playing with friends. She enjoyed playing sports, especially softball and football! She also loved to dance. She was a dance student and then teacher for 17 years! In third grade, Cindy won an award in a national publishing contest sponsored by a large publishing company. It was then that she decided she would be an author when she grew up. In college, Cindy studied English and elementary education. Although she was interested in many things, she loved working with students. So she graduated with degrees in teaching. Cindy has been a public school educator for almost 20 years. She has worked for a Minnesota school district as a high school English teacher, an elementary teacher and is currently a curriculum director. She loves children's literature and makes regular visits to the children's section in bookstores and libraries. Cindy lives in Minnesota with her two daughters. When she is not working or busy being a mom, she can be found digging in one of her gardens, spending time with her many friends or with her nose in a good book. Related titles »

Carla Williams
Carla Williams is a writer and photographer. Although she no longer has time to take pictures, she does write a lot about photography. So far she has co-written two books on the history of photography, as well as numerous articles and essays about photography, art, and culture. In 2002 she was a Rockefeller Fellow in the Humanities at Stanford University, where she worked on a biographical writing project about Maudelle Bass, an artist's model and dancer from the 1930s through the 1950s. Uniting her love of photographs, research, and history, Carla has created a family tree website, with her older sister. Through it they have met many relatives they didn't even know existed! In her free time Carla loves to read mysteries and is thinking about creating a series of mysteries based on photographs. Her dream job is to be a ghost writer. Related titles »

Cecilia Minden, PhD, is the former director of the Language and Literacy Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is now a reading consultant for school and library publications. She earned her PhD in reading education from the University of Virginia. Cecilia and her husband Dave Cupp live outside Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
