A perennially fascinating subject for young readers, a new twelve volume, impressively informative series about the gods and goddesses of the Greeks from The Child’s World is especially and unreservedly recommended for both elementary school and community library collections. The books comprising this remarkably outstanding and beautifully illustrated series (9781503840058, List $359.16/S&L $251.40) include Aphrodite: Goddess of Love and Beauty; Apollo: God of the Sun, Healing, Music, and Poetry; Ares: God of War; Artemis: Goddess of Hunting and Protector of Animals; Eros: God of Love; Hades: God of the Underworld; Hephaestus: God of Fire, Metalwork, and Building; Hera: Queen of the Gods, Goddess of Marriage; Hermes: God of Travel and Trade; Poseidon: God of the Sea and Earthquakes; Zeus: King of the Gods, God of Sky and Storms. Each individual, 32 page title features a library binding for extended shelf life, as well as detailed maps, information sidebars, a listing of equivalent Roman Gods, a section on the Greek God family Tree, sources for further research, thematically appropriate web sites, a table of contents and an index.
A noteworthy review of Greek Gods and Goddesses from School Library Journal on November 1, 2019
This series covers the gods’ exciting adventures and exploits with storyteller prose and a smooth flow. Tight sentences capture mythic personalities, aptly presenting them as larger than life, foibles intact. Covers are child-appealing; colorful, cartoon-like illustrations drive texts. Sidebars are ‘midbars:’ Good explanatory background information is set in colored columns between two text columns. ‘Characters and Places’ opens each title with a map of ancient Greece, Mount Olympus, and a gallery of characters’ pictures, names (including pronunciation guides), and descriptions. Back matter includes ‘Principal Gods of Greek Mythology: A Family Tree’ and presents pictures and names clarifying gods’ relationships. VERDICT Well done. Recommended for fans and myth newcomers in public and school libraries.
